About Dr. McAshan
I am a Postdoctoral Fellow providing therapeutic services under the supervision of Dr. Jaya Mathew. I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas Woman’s University in 2018. I have been working as a clinician in therapeutic settings since completing my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University in 2006. I have worked as a substance abuse counselor both in inpatient and outpatient settings. I spent two years as the admissions coordinator and an individual and group therapist at the Renfrew Center of Texas helping clients with eating disorders. In addition, I have worked both for the Irving Family Advocacy Center and the Children’s Advocacy Center treating post traumatic stress disorder in both adolescents and adults.
I view therapy as a collaborative process that depends on a foundation of trust, honesty, and respect between client and therapist. Our thoughts, feelings and actions all interact and influence each other, and that therapy can be a safe place to experiment with changing thoughts and behaviors to attain a healthier, happier life. I understand that all people need attention, authenticity, validation, and warmth, and I strive to bring that into all client interactions.
I work with clients from diverse backgrounds with a variety of presenting problems including anxiety, adjustment issues, depression, body image issues, procrastination, self-esteem issues, stress management, and emotional overeating. Specific areas of interest include eating disorders, social anxiety disorder, trauma, couples therapy, and perinatal mood issues.
I have spent most of my life in Texas and Illinois. I am passionate about art, movies, and cooking, and enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
